My journey to find calm in an anxious world
I haven't posted about my anxiety lately but that doesn't mean I haven't had it. I've been busy discovering over the last few years that there is no one single answer or cure for anxiety.
It started with an emergency visit to the hospital and finding out that I did not have a heart attack; I had a panic attack.
That's when my journey began. I started visiting my health care practitioner regularly to get a handle on my health. She prescribed an anti-anxiety medication that I continue to use. I was so relieved that it worked quickly.
But after a bit, I found that the meds alone didn't take away all of my anxiety. I needed something to take the edge off.
I started trying different combinations of medical marijuana -- indica and sativa, leaning toward indica. Cannabis calms.
Still, the anxiety lingered and that's when I started paying attention to what I do in my daily life and the many ways I could find calm.
I've learned, after many stumbles and falls, that easing my anxiety effectively requires a huge lifestyle change.
The things I found I need a combination of daily are as follows:
--Walk at least 10 minutes
--Breathe!!
--Cut down on caffeine and energy drinks... drink more water
--Stop eating processed foods...eat more fruits and veggies...
--Ground yourself...walk barefoot outside...hug a tree...plant a garden
--Get a hobby. I take pictures of our beautiful New Mexico sky, and writing this blog is a hobby.
--Do good things in the community. I volunteer at a Moriarty nonprofit, Bethel Storehouse. It does me a world of good, and I like to think I do them some good, too.
--Think outside yourself.
--Be kind to others.
--Last, recognize that the nervous energy you're feeling might be from someone or something else or being in a certain place...if you can remove yourself from the situation, do so. Otherwise, learn ways to stay calm until you can escape.
I hope you will take some of these ideas to help you figure out how you can find calm in your life.
Pay attention to what makes you happy and start doing those things every day. You matter.
That's it for now. I hope I've given you good stuff to think about. Until next time...
